As Samaritan House celebrated the opening of the first of three new buildings in June, we also welcomed the first resident family in the agency’s fifteen-year history. Several of the units in the first building are now occupied, with other residents going through the intake process.
The new Villages at Samaritan House development includes sixty-six new one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments that are available to individuals, couples and families with children. Rental assistance is provided for the units on a sliding-scale basis, and supportive services are offered, although on a less intensive schedule than the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) building.
In addition to the apartments, a new family health and education center will soon be made available, which will offer everything from computer training to resume preparation, and after-school tutoring for children.
Before the Villages, Samaritan House could only house individuals at the Single Resident Occupancy (SRO) facility. This meant that, in order to receive services, a resident might have to live apart from spouse, partner or children. The introduction of family-friendly apartments at the Villages keeps couples and families together, which helps add another network of support for the family member or members living with HIV/AIDS.
The greatly expanded facility brings with it new challenges and opportunities. Already, we are experiencing needs that are new to the Samaritan House family. Currently, we are in need of a baby bed, appropriate for a six-month-old infant. Needs for other supplies for babies, children and adults are listed here.
