Help
Samaritan House Grow...
Become a Volunteer!
Often times,
the first reaction of people who visit Samaritan House
is one of reservation, if not nervousness. But soon
after, once our visitors have the opportunity to tour
our newly remodeled facility and meet the friendly,
outgoing residents, that tone changes. Then, the question
on everyone's mind is usually, "How can I help?" So
we have included a brief summary of some of the areas
in which Samaritan House currently has needs:
Supper
Clubs
Groups purchase, prepare and serve a dinner
for up to 52 residents on a monthly basis. Each Supper
Club that commits to one dinner a month for an entire
year saves Samaritan House almost $4,000 in staff
and materials expenses. To learn more about the supper
clubs, click here.
Lunch-time
Servers
Volunteers assist kitchen staff in serving
lunch to residents from 12:00 - 1:00pm, Monday through
Friday
Special
Events
Help organize seasonal parties (Halloween,
Casino Night, Run to Joe's, Christmas, Golf Scramble
Benefit, etc.) and volunteer the day of the event
to ensure everything comes together smoothly.
Tutoring
We want a network of individuals that enjoy
teaching English as a second language, GED preparation
coursework and other basic academic skills. Volunteers
can either work one-on-one with residents, or if they
prefer, they can offer a group class.
Computer
Training
We have recently offered mini-courses that
were well-received on how to use the computer. Basics
such as typing up a resume, navigating the web and
setting up an email account are popular topics.
Transportation
Volunteers are needed to transport residents
to and from medical appointments and special events
in our nine passenger van.
Landscaping
Gather a group of friends who like to work with their
hands and come help create a resident garden or plant
some shrubs.
Volunteer
opportunities are certainly not limited to the above
items either. We have some people who bring by cookies
once a week, cut hair, offer courses in sewing, pottery,
music lessons and much more.
If you
would like to volunteer at Samaritan House, please
contact Sue Mahoney at (817) 332-6410, ext.162 or
use the online signup
form to request more information. Another great
way to get involved is to come to an Information
Session and help us to spread the word about Samaritan
House in the community.
