By reducing homelessness,
substance abuse, crime, new HIV infections,
and the demand for publicly funded medical
care, Samaritan House makes Fort Worth a
better place for everyone!
'More Life' puts HIV in the spotlight
Unlikely partnership to help spread word about AIDS
In May 2008, the Fort Worth Opera will produce the opera version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Angels in America, as part of its festival season. The opera, a story about AIDS in the United States in the early 1980s, will be presented at the Scott Theater, one of the performance venues at the Fort Worth Community Art Center.
Several months ago, the Opera approached Samaritan House with an intriguing proposal to organize a number of community education events in conjunction with the thought-provoking play. Samaritan House staff recognized a much larger opportunity and suggested that the project become a collaboration of all four local AIDS Service Organizations. From there, the vision grew to include performances, AIDS-related art exhibits, lectures, films, science presentations and community education events. The result was More Life, a month-long series of activities at the Fort Worth Community Art Center and other venues around town.
The full name of the project is More Life: The Art and Science of AIDS, and its mission is to draw attention to the continuing impact of AIDS and to educate the public about the disease.
The roster of participating organizations already includes Stage West, the Fort Worth Library Foundation, Contemporary Dance, Open Door Productions, Teen Poetry Slam, Hip Pocket Theater and Q Cinema. Discussions are ongoing with other potential partners. More Life will take place during the month of May 2008 in multiple venues across the city.
