Samaritan House Seeds of Hope
and Harvest of Hope Gardens
The garden projects began in spring of 2006 when unused space behind Samaritan House was transformed into a beautiful flower garden. The nonprofit Feed by Grace constructed the basic plan and beds for the garden. In March of 2006, the Rotary STRS program organized a group of 60 eighth-grade students from Riverside Middle School to volunteer and they began planting the garden. With the help of materials donated by Feed by Grace, these students were able to plant a lovely and relaxing flower garden. The following March another group of youth from the Richland Hills Church of Christ helped to continue the growth of the garden project by constructing the organic vegetable garden. This project is overseen by Greg Joel, a Samaritan House resident. The garden has become his second home and the scarecrow is his personal assistant. The vegetables are thrriving under Greg's care. This project has led to the creation of the Hope Works program, a back-to-work program for the residents, Greg also coordinates this program. These gardens are a great example of the teamwork that is present at Samaritan House and the dedication of the community to support this project. In May 2007, both the begetable and flower gardens were dedicated at a community-wide celebration.
